Introduction

At twenty minutes past one on Sunday 24th March 1895, the severe gales that were affecting the Redditch area caused the catastrophic collapse of the Headless Cross Wesleyan Chapel.

It was lucky that the collapse happened between the morning and afternoon services and as such caused no injuries. The loss of the building was however a serious blow to the congregation who were only recently celebrating being debt free from expenses of previous restoration and re-development works.

The photograph below shows the extent of the devastation. This copy of the photograph was part of the contents of a “Time Capsule” placed under a foundation stone when the chapel was rebuilt in 1896.

These pages record the contents of that time capsule that was recovered when the chapel, which closed to worship in 2009, was demolished in April 2016.
