      Ancestry site Military records


      Private Bernard Ward Silk, born and resided in Redditch and enlisted in Birmingham,
      Service No 15/1415, 14th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, killed in action 23rd
      July 1916, Western European Theatre.  Remembered on Thiepval Memorial, Picardie,
      France, Plot: Pier and Face 9 A 9 B and 10 B.  He was awarded the British War Medal and
      Victory Medal.




      Bernard Ward Silk was born in 1894 in the Alcester District and baptised on 22nd July
      1894 in Acock;s Green, Worcestershire.  His parents were William Henry Silk and Eliza
      Bottley Silk.  On 1911 census Bernard aged Clerk, lived with his parents William Henry
      Silk and Eliza Botteley Silk at 98 Oakly Road, Redditch.

      Birmingham Daily Post – Saturday 5th August 1916


      Mr and Mrs W. H. Silk, of Worcester Road, Redditch, have received information that their
      son Bernard, has been killed in action.  Prior to enlisting in the army the deceased had
      rendered service in the Y.M.C.A. huts and before the war he had been actively interested
      in the Boy Scout movement.
